How To Choose a Patterned Carpet

Patterned carpet is making strides in the design world and has increasingly become more and more in demand. These patterns range from bold and dramatic to simple and understated.

How to choose a patterned carpet.

The category of carpeting is created with a variety of yarn constructions by varying the loop and cut heights. Whether it is a color tone change or a mix of loops and plush yarn types used to achieve the design, the different combinations give us not only texture but added warmth and interest to a variety of rooms.

Choose a design that fits your personal style and lifestyle. Think about if you prefer a discreet neutral decorating base or wish to create a dramatic style statement. Patterned carpet comes in a range of patterns from soft, unassuming cross hatch to bold geometrics. Patterns can used alone to create a subtle statement or neutral enough to leave open the option to layer with a bolder, room centering area rug.

On the practical side, the low-profile styles handle traffic beautifully and can disguise wear and tear. Full loop looks result in minimal footprints and vacuum marks. Many patterns highlight a light color while disguising stains from a low color.

A thought to ponder before you buy. Full loop and mixed construction carpet are not always pet friendly. The loops can entice your furry family member to scratch or pick and this could result in a pulled loop which can lead to runs when you vacuum. Always consider all your family members before making a purchase.

Our showroom is full of options and ideas. Any sample can be borrowed so that you can see, touch, and visualize the looks in your home. The lighting in our showroom is different from the lighting in your home and this makes a significant difference in the way each color and pattern is portrayed.

When you bring the samples home, follow these easy steps to help you find your pattern and color:

  • Match it! Place the sample board up against your trim so you can see how it will fit with your existing wall color, décor, adjoining floors and other furnishings.

  • Move it! Take your sample on a tour around your room(s) throughout the day. You will notice changes during various lighting situations throughout the day and evening. Doing this will help you see which color/pattern is right for each room.

  • Mark it! Use sticky notes or painter’s tape to tag the colors and pattern that stands out to you. Do this step as you revisit the sample during different times of the day. The lighting change may change your top choices.

If you are stuck in a tug of war and just can’t choose, contact us and we can order individual cuttings (usually 6” squares) of the colors and this can further help you decide
